Protests Erupt in Jharkhand Over Recruitment Exam Irregularities

Reports indicate that police used lathi-charges, tear gas, and water cannons to disperse the crowds, resulting in injuries on both sides, including several police officers, as claimed by local authorities.
The ongoing unrest has prompted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to call for a state-wide bandh on August 10 to protest what they describe as police atrocities against the student protesters. BJP state president Aditya Sahu announced that the bandh would continue from 8 am until midnight on the scheduled day. The BJP's stance reflects growing political tensions surrounding the protest.
Meanwhile, student leader Devendra Nath Mahto was hospitalized as a result of the police action, drawing criticism from various political factions. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the use of force against the students, urging the state government to address their grievances promptly. He noted that the voices of these aspirants should be heard and their issues resolved immediately.
Protesters have expressed their frustrations regarding what they see as a pattern of irregularities, citing incidents of paper leaks and exam cancellations since the state was formed. They have demanded the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination and called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter. Many participants noted that police responses have obstructed their right to peaceful protest, with some questioning the justification for the heavy-handed tactics employed by law enforcement.
As tensions continue, the Jharkhand government has urged students not to fall prey to political agendas. Chief Minister Hemant Soren's comments aimed to reassure the students about their future, asserting their essential role in the state's development. However, the government's message contrasts with the reality on the ground as protests show no signs of abating.
Criticism of the police response has also come from other political leaders and groups, including Abhijeet Dipke of the Cockroach Janta Party, who accused law enforcement of disproportionately using force against students. He emphasized that the protesters are fighting for their rights rather than for political gains, adding to the ongoing debate about the treatment of youth in democratic spaces.
