Air India to Mandate Drug Testing for All Pilots Starting August 13

Air India has announced that it will begin mandatory substance testing for all its pilots starting August 13. This decision comes in the wake of an incident on August 4, when an Airbus A320neo, operating flight AI 2379 from Phuket to Delhi, experienced a sudden altitude loss of approximately 91 meters, resulting in injuries to several passengers.

According to reports, the investigation into this incident revealed that the captain tested positive for marijuana after the flight. This prompted the airline to implement comprehensive screening for prohibited substances and medications, ensuring compliance with aviation regulations.

The testing will take place at Air India’s Gurgaon Academy during pilot training or post-flight at various airports and locations specified by the airline. The new policy aims to enhance safety measures and maintain high operational standards within the airline's pilots.

Air India currently employs more than 5,000 pilots, and the internal memo detailing the new testing protocols has been circulated to ensure all staff are informed about this initiative.
