Marcos Confident in Economic Cooperation with China Amid Disputes

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr expressed confidence in the economic cooperation between the Philippines and China, mentioning the history of collaboration between the two nations. His remarks were made during an event with foreign journalists in Manila, where he noted that there have been multiple instances of cooperation, particularly in response to energy supply challenges during recent conflicts in the Middle East.

Additionally, on Friday, Marcos stated that discussions with China regarding joint oil and gas exploration had progressed, even in the context of ongoing tensions in the South China Sea. He indicated a desire to reach an agreement before his term ends in mid-2028.

Marcos revealed a preliminary understanding with China concerning resupply missions to the BRP Sierra Madre at Second Thomas Shoal, while clarifying that this arrangement should not be construed as Manila seeking approval from Beijing or conceding its claims.

The remarks highlight both the ongoing geopolitical complexities and the efforts to maintain economic ties despite existing disputes between the two countries.
