Magnitude 5 earthquake shakes Granada and causes material damage

A magnitude 5 earthquake struck Granada early this morning. The National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded around forty aftershocks following the initial quake, which had its epicenter in Alhendín. The tremors were felt by the population, causing panic and some material damage to buildings in the region.

According to available information, the intensity of the quake led to the evacuation of a building in Las Gabias. The tremors occurred in several locations across the metropolitan area of Granada, focusing mainly on the southern part of the city. The aftershocks varied in magnitude from 1.5 to 3.1 and were recorded at a relatively shallow depth.

El Observador reported that about twenty aftershocks were felt during the early hours, all without any reported casualties. Several citizens described the intensity of the tremors, recounting moments of panic, especially during the stronger ones.

The most notable quake among those recorded was magnitude 3.1, with its epicenter in Armilla. This tremor had the greatest impact on the population, being felt by a significant number of people according to reports.

Local authorities continue to assess the material damage and respond to the needs of those affected. So far, there have been no reports of injuries or complications associated with this seismic event.

Authorities recommend that the population remain calm and follow safety guidelines. Precautionary measures are being implemented in various vulnerable areas of the city as the situation is monitored.
