First Total Solar Eclipse in Europe Since 1999

On the evening of August 12, 2023, a total solar eclipse occurred in the northern hemisphere, visible in several European countries. The phenomenon took place in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal, and Spain, where the sun was completely obscured by the moon's disc.

In the largest cities of Western Europe, sunlight was blocked by 85 to 95 percent by the moon, generating great interest and excitement among the public. To commemorate this event, special solar eclipse glasses and telescopes were widely sold in stores, often days ahead of the occurrence.

This eclipse was the first total one in the continental European region since 1999, further enhancing the anticipation and excitement among many people.
