Campfire on Kalmthoutse Heide during stargazing and eclipse viewing
A group gathered around a campfire on the Kalmthoutse Heide to admire the stars and an eclipse, prompting intervention from emergency services.
Last night, people watching the eclipse and stars on the Kalmthoutse Heide lit a campfire to keep warm. This created a life-threatening situation as the flames reached a height of fifteen centimeters and the fire was already spreading underground.
The police and fire brigade quickly arrived on the scene and were able to extinguish the fire. According to Britt Vervoort from the Grens Police Zone, lighting a campfire is particularly dangerous given the dry conditions.
