Study shows: Young people in Germany often have fixed-term jobs

The microcensus reveals that many young people in Germany predominantly have fixed-term contracts, while resistance to further fixed-term employment grows.

According to a report from the Federal Statistical Office, 18.3 percent of the workforce aged 15 to 25 in Germany was employed on a fixed-term basis last year. This equates to nearly one in five young workers. The results from the microcensus show that despite a decrease in the total number of fixed-term jobs, access to permanent positions remains limited, especially at the start of one’s career.

Resistance has now formed against the proposed expansion of fixed-term employment opportunities. Critics warn that young people are increasingly being pushed into precarious working conditions, which could have long-term consequences for their professional development.
