Forest fire in Huesca affects 8,000 hectares and prompts evacuations

The forest fire declared on Monday in Las Peñas de Riglos, Huesca, has already affected 8,000 hectares, and its development has become complicated, according to Luis Biendicho, the Environment and Tourism Minister of the Government of Aragón.

The flames are advancing toward the areas of the monasteries of San Juan de la Peña and Santa Cilia de Jaca, where firefighting efforts are concentrated. The fire reaching these areas raises concerns, as San Juan de la Peña is considered a symbol of the origin of Aragón.

As a result of the fire, 16 municipalities have been evacuated, affecting approximately 830 people who remain displaced from their homes. The Military Emergency Unit (UME) has transported, during the operations, bone remains of the first monarchs and other valuable artifacts from the area.

The wind is also complicating the situation with the fire, increasing the risk of flame spread, which has led to intensified efforts to control the blaze.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have established emergency procedures in the affected municipalities while firefighting operations are underway.
