The Federal Council has rejected the 'Compass' initiative, which called for a cantonal majority in the new EU treaties. Justice Minister Beat Jans informed on Thursday about the Council's rejection, citing shortcomings in the initiative that were deemed too late and too vague.

Furthermore, the Federal Council pointed out that the initiative would not retroactively force a second vote on the EU treaties. Should this occur nonetheless, additional problems are expected, according to the Federal Council's assessment.
